I have laundry envy. It’s not that I’m envious of how much laundry someone else has. Unless of course they have less than me or they have someone do it for them. What I envy is HOW their laundry smells. Seriously. I love clothes that smell clean. Do you know what I mean? That just washed detergent smell. For some reason I cannot obtain that same smell for my laundry. My family’s clothes smell clean if I sniff the fabric but I want it stronger. I want them to smell clean when they walk in the room.Please don’t think I’m crazy. I don’t know why I’ve become so obsessive about how my laundry smells. I’ve tried every detergent there is. I run out and buy every new scent that hits the market. I use fabric softener and dryer sheets. I’ve tried different combinations of scents in hopes of obtaining that strong clean smell but to no avail.
I’ve come to believe that it must be how I do my laundry. Should I use double the amount of detergent? Liquid or powder? One dryer sheet or two? Is my dryer too hot? Should I line dry my laundry? What am I doing wrong? Would someone please enlighten me?
I am seriously envious of people who have clean smelling clothes. I will question them about their laundry habits to the point that I get a you-are-a-freak-look. I can even name all my friends and family that I’ve deemed to have the best smelling laundry. I don’t know why this is so important to me but it is. Just another odd fact about me that you probably wish you didn’t know.
I’ve recently come close to achieving that strong clean smell. I was sent Tide’s new product Pure Essentials detergent with baking soda and Bounce pure essentials dryer sheets in the white lilac scent. Now that you know about my clean smelling laundry obsession can you imagine how excited I was to try a new scent? I was even more excited when these two products passed my sniff test. Still not as strong as I would like which leads me to believe that I probably should just get a new washer and dryer. The problem has to be with my machinery. I’ll have to figure out how to render them unusable since I don’t think my hubby is going to buy a new washer and dryer just because I don’t think they clean well enough. As far as he’s concerned if his clothes look clean then they are clean. He does not understand the importance of smelling clean.
For now I’ll stick with Tide Pure Essentials Detergent, and Bounce Pure Essentials dryer sheets. Tide and Bounce have always been at the top of my list and I am not being paid to write that. I swear. I love how both of these smell and they do a great job of cleaning and softening too. My samples ran out a few days ago and I was like a laundry crack addict trying to score some more samples since these two products haven’t hit the shelves yet at my Target store.

OMG you are not alone. Every time my sister-in-law gives us hand-me-downs, I totally sniff it. I can’t figure out how she makes it smell so good, and I’m too chicken to ask.
I have to admit that I too sniff laundry that belongs to other people. I’m always trying to figure out how they walk into the room and make everything smell lovely! I am trying to use up the rest of my Gain powder so I can try some new stuff. I’ve never used this detergent so I’d be tickled to try it out!

i wouldn’t worry about your laundry obsession, there are a lot of us out there but we’re still in the closet. i’m in love with ‘cheer’ but am always searching for great new products. and when you break your washer, get a bosch….you won’t be sorry!
I love Tide white lilac, I also really enjoy the lavender scent. Oh I hope I win…nothing better than sleeping on sheets that smell wonderful!

I’m with you I love that clean smell!
(But what I would really, really love is if someone just came by once a week and did my laundry for me. Sort, wash, dry, and especially the fold and put away!! Just a small job really!!)

I use Method detergent and dryer sheets and I am in love with them. I think the scent is water lily or something.
I know the smell you mean. And unfortunately hanging clothes outside to dry is the best way I know to get it. But, yuck, I remember doing that and having birds pass overhead, bringing in heavy, frozen sheets in winter, and how time consuming and just plain hard it was to do it correctly (requiring minimum ironing). Oooooh, how I hope I win.
Me too…I put way too much liquid downey in so that the clothes smell good. However, it takes them much longer to dry and with a power bill that hit the $500 mark twice in the last 3 months I had to stop. Looking desperatly for a new way to get everything smelling great!
actually, those new front loading washer/dryers that are BEAUTIFUL happen to be much more eco-friendly, energy efficient, and clean clothes more thoroughly. Your hubby may be sold on those details!!!
I find that snuggle fabric softener gives off a strong smell, especially if you line dry.

I am all about that clean laundry smell. Heck, my favorite candles are CLEAN COTTON and FRESH LINEN!When I go for walks around the neighborhood, I love passing a house where you can smell the dryer sheet scents coming out of the dryer vent. I guess as moms we have to smell and touch so much GROSS stuff that a fresh scent is well, refreshing!
I usually just by the cheapest thing at the store, so wow, brand name laundry stuff would just be FABULOUS!! Sign me up.
Unfortunately the clean laundry smell eludes me as well. My mom’s laundry smells great. You’d think mine would to since I learned form her. Alas it is not the case.

This cracked me up, I’m the same way. My fear is that our clothes will smell weird, or worse, will have that horrid sour smell when left in the washer too long before drying. I love nice smelling clothes (Dreft is my favorite scent, not very stong smell tough)
Right now I am probably going to do 6 to 8 loads today (I put if off for way too long)

I am often very guilty of leaving clothes in the washer until they have a rather….unclean smell. Then, to re-wash or not to re-wash. Usually I play it safe and rewash but sometimes I do the old extra dryer sheet and hope for the best. Guh! I want fresh laundry!

I can totally relate!! My best friend and I are constantly competing to have the best smelling clothes in Indiana. We are ALWAYS sniffing each others clothes and she sniffs my poor kids arms ’till they are raw…ok…ok..not really raw but she does drive them nuts. I sniff other peoples laundry to. (: I babysat my nephew and his cloths always smelled so good. It took lots of experimenting but I finally found out what it was! I do a ton of laundry since I have 3 young children and would love to win this basket!
I am forever doing laundry and I don’t even have kids! Being a teacher means having a zillion more little messes whirling around you - sometimes I wonder why I bother to buy nice-looking clothes. Everything is covered in marker and glue by the end of the day…

I love fresh smelling laundry too, but to me it is only truly fresh if it has been hanging outside in the sun to dry…makes it extra special as opposed to being in a dryer
